How Islam See Virginity

May 20, 2011 By: admin Category: Muslim culture

Talking about virginity is a bit complicated. It is because in certain countries, virginity is something that should be kept until the wedding. On the contrary, many people do not see this as something should be discussed. As virginity related to the sex and sexual activities, they think that the most important think is giving proper sexual education to teenagers. So, there will be less youths or adults who get sexual disease. In Muslim culture, virginity is something that should kept both for men and women until they marry. Of course, this rule is set because of some positive reasons. The first is virginity relates to someone’s respectability. Not only other people who will respect the women or men, Allah will give the person special gift for those who can keep the virginity.

Those who cannot keep the virginity will get big sin. Allah states clearly in Quran that people have to stay away from something called zina. It can be explained as the activities related to sex. Once people try to get closer to zina, there will be strong temptation to do that again and again. If getting closer is a big sin, doing zina will be more than a sin. Besides, Islam does not recognize woman and man relationship before marriage. This is also a way to keep the virginity for both men and women. In finding the future husband or wife, Islam asks the followers to know each other but there should be another person who accompanied them. Being together in the same place and the same time without someone else tends to make the couple do zina.

Fasting is the one of the rituals in Islam beliefs. This is the period when the Muslims have to avoid eating, drinking, smoking, and having sexual activity in the morning until afternoon. Fasting is done during the Ramadan month, which is the ninth month in Islamic calendar. In addition, Muslims are suggested to do only the positive activities such as helping the poor, studying, reading Quran, working and others. So, foul talk, lustful thoughts, and vain speech should be reduced. As the third pillar in Islam, every adult has to do this. In Quran, Allah has said clearly that He also order the people before the Islamic ages to fast. It can be inferred that Jewish and Christian are also asked to fast.

Whatever the things Allah order to people will result great benefits. Although fasting looks so terrible and difficult to do, the positive benefits are countless. Since the compulsory fasting is done during the Ramadan, it creates a sense of community and belonging. Almost all Muslims in the world are fasting in the same time whether they are poor or rich. It gives the opportunity for the rich to feel what the poor feel. As the month of charity, Ramadan will be so beautiful because there are many people who will donate their belongings. However, there are some conditions that allow the Muslims for not fasting. For example, pregnant and nursing mothers may not fast. People who are sick and the menstruating women do not have to fast.
